Turkish Foreign Minister: US statement on genocide will never be accepted in the conscience of the Turkish people

“We strongly reject and denounce the US President’s statement on the events of 1915, which took place under the pressure of radical Armenian circles and anti-Turkish groups on April 24,” the statement said. Turkish Foreign Minister, after the recognition of the Armenian Genocide by US President Joe Biden.

According to the Turkish Foreign Ministry: It is clear that this statement has no scientific or legal basis, nor is it supported by evidence. With regard to the events of 1915, none of the conditions required for the use of the term “genocide” strictly defined in international law are met.

The nature of the events of 1915 does not change according to current political motives or domestic political considerations. Such an attitude serves only a vulgar distortion of history.

The European Court of Human Rights has clearly confirmed the controversial nature of the events of 1915. In addition, in 2005 Turkey proposed to the Armenian side to set up a Joint History Committee to have a fair remembrance in the light of the historical events of this period. Although Armenia has never responded to this proposal, it is still on the table. In this sense, the statement of the US President, who is neither legally nor morally empowered to judge historical issues, has no value.

As a country at the heart of an area called the cradle of civilizations, which is constantly striving for the peace and tranquility of humanity, despite all its hardships, Turkey has never shied away from facing its history and will not take lessons. from any country, including the US, on this.

Elsewhere, the Turkish Foreign Minister notes: “This statement by the United States, which distorts historical facts, will never be accepted in the conscience of the Turkish people and will open a deep wound that undermines our mutual trust and friendship.

We call on the US President to correct this disastrous mistake, which serves no purpose other than to satisfy certain political circles and to reverse efforts aimed at establishing a practice of peaceful coexistence in the region, especially between the Turkish and Armenian nations. ».
