Many Western governments have also since last Friday called on their citizens in Turkey to “be on the alert” because there is a risk of attacks, in retaliation, they say, for the burning of the Koran in northern European countries.
The US and France then advised their citizens to avoid certain tourist areas in central Istanbul, such as Taksim Square, as well as areas around churches and synagogues.
