Turkish media: Islamic State leader arrested in Istanbul

Senior Turkish officials say the new ISIS leader has been arrested in a recent raid in Istanbul.

Counterterrorism men and MIT agents have arrested a man believed to have led the extremist group since its former leader was killed in a US-led operation in Syria in February, officials said on condition of anonymity.

The Turkish news website OdaTV identified the detainee as Abu al-Hassan al-Qurayshi without saying how he obtained the information. Previous reports have given a similar name to the new ISIS leader.

Bloomberg News could not independently verify the identity of the man arrested by Turkish authorities.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was informed of his arrest, officials said on Thursday. He is expected to announce the arrest in the coming days, OdaTV reported.

Officials say the ISIS leader was arrested after a long police surveillance of a house where he was staying. OdaTV said police did not open fire during the raid.

The news of the arrest also came at a convenient time for Turks, as Ankara signals plans for a new operation on Syrian soil to counter US-backed Kurdish YPG forces considered terrorists by Turkey for their links with the PKK.
