Turkish NGOs Raise Millions of Dollars in Cryptocurrency for Earthquake Victims

Non-profit organizations managed to raise millions of dollars in cryptocurrencies to help those affected by the devastating earthquake that shook Turkey. The death toll has already exceeded 8,500 people.

Ahbap, a charity led by Turkish singer Haluk Levent,
collected about $2 million donations on air, Avalanche and BSC in less than a day.

Levent assured via Twitter that the donation addresses were approved by the Turkish Financial Crimes Investigation Board (MASAK), despite the ban on cryptocurrency payments that the country’s central bank introduced back in the spring of 2021.

Local cryptocurrency exchange Paribu is also raising funds for several non-profit organizations to help those affected.

Now many cryptocurrency companies are uniting to help the victims in Turkey. For example, the largest crypto exchange Binance has prepared a help package for local users, promising to credit each of its Turkish clients with BNB tokens worth $100.

Bitfinex and Tether have pledged 5 million Turkish lira to Turkey. And Huobi Global and Tron announced the creation of a fund of 2 million Turkish lira to support the victims.

Early on Monday morning, February 6, several earthquakes occurred in southeastern Turkey, near the border with Syria. The death toll in Turkey is already over 8,500 and in Syria at least 2,500.
