Russia and Ukraine remain “agreed” to meet again with their representatives in Turkey for talks, despite recent developments in the field, a senior Turkish official said today.
“Russia and Ukraine agree to hold talks in Turkey, but it is still far from an agreement on a joint text,” the official told reporters, speaking on condition of anonymity.
He confirmed that the issue of Crimea and Donbass is difficult to resolve. He did not give a timetable for the possible new meeting of the two delegations in Turkey. The last direct talks took place on March 29 in Istanbul and discussed “the most sensitive issues” such as Ukraine’s “neutrality”, the Turkish official said. He did not comment on the value or accuracy of the information which was allegedly leaked to Ukraine, but said that maintaining some independence was not the answer.
Russia said on Thursday that Ukraine had withdrawn from some of the positions it had presented at the Istanbul talks, which Moscow had welcomed, but the Turkish official said he was unaware of them.
