Several shops, cafes and restaurants in Istanbul remained closed for a day on Wednesday (2) and others had few customers as part of a protest for a day without spending on the opposition against the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu.
The Government of Türkiye denounced the appeals of opposition to the mass commercial boycott that triggered protests across the country, describing them on Wednesday as an “attempted sabotage”.
A general call of boycott announced by the main opposition, the People’s Republican Party (CHP), was expanded on Wednesday to include the stoppage of all purchases for a day.
The action led some stores to close in solidarity with those who criticized the arrest as a politicized and undemocratic attempt to harm the electoral perspectives of the opposition.
“The coffees are very empty, the markets are empty. I think they are doing the right thing,” said Nurcan, who did not want to last.
Several ministers and pro-government celebrities, including former German national team player and Real Madrid, Mesut Ozil, used the hashtag #Boykotdegilmillize (“It’s not a boycott but a national damage”) to emphasize their position.
