Turkish presidency: The Ukraine-Russia grain agreement is signed on Friday

LAST UPDATE: 23.34

Russia, Ukraine and Turkey will tomorrow sign the agreement on grain exports from the besieged Ukrainian Black Sea ports in the presence of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

According to an announcement by the Turkish presidency, the g.g. of the UN who had announced that he would travel to Istanbul on Thursday, will attend the event for the signing of the agreement together with Tayyip Erdogan at the Dolma Bakhce Palace.

Earlier today, after all, a member of the Ukrainian delegation had reported that exports may resume from three ports, those of Odessa, Pivdeni and Chornomorsk.

“We hope that in the future we will be able to expand” deliveries from other ports as well, Ukrainian lawmaker Rustem Umerov told reporters.

According to this source, security for the convoys will be handled by a UN monitoring group based in Istanbul. Russian ships will not have the right to enter Ukrainian territorial waters. “We don’t trust them, even if they sign an agreement with the UN,” he added.

Russia and Ukraine are both the world’s main suppliers of wheat, but Russia’s February 24 invasion of its neighbor led to a shutdown of Kiev’s exports, leaving dozens of ships stranded and some 25 million tons of grain blocked in the port of Odesa.

The crisis has sent food prices soaring and heightened fears of an international food crisis.

US: We hold Russia accountable for its implementation

The US State Department, for its part, welcomed the agreement, but noted that it holds Russia responsible for the implementation of its provisions.

State Department spokesman Ned Price made the comments during a regular press briefing.

Kyiv: “A document on grain exports may be signed”

Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry announced late Thursday night that another round of UN-sponsored talks will be held in Turkey tomorrow to unblock Ukrainian grain exports.

“In short, a document may be signed that will bind the sides (to ensure) the safe operation of Black Sea export corridors,” a ministry spokesman, Oleg Nikolenko, told Reuters.

Nikolenko added that the Ukrainian delegation at these talks will support only those decisions that guarantee the security of the southern regions of Ukraine, the “strong positions” of the Ukrainian armed forces in the Black Sea and safe exports of Ukrainian agricultural products.
