Turkish soldiers are prohibited from using “smart” mobile phones in operational zones

The Turkish Ministry of Defense has announced that it is now prohibited for military personnel located in military operation zones to use “smart” mobile phones phones and camera phones. They are also predicted heavy penalties to military personnel who post on social media in violation of relevant regulations and orders.

“The use of smart phones and camera phones in the operational zones is strictly prohibited,” a Turkish Defense Ministry source said during the weekly regular briefing of defense editors.

The same source added that they will be enforced severe penalties to staff found to be acting in breach of relevant legislation and orders by making postings that constitute an offence. As he said, “personnel who will take up duties at the border and in zones of operations have begun to be briefed before their deployment on the communication needs and the negative effects of the devices, systems and applications that will be used with the use of social media networking”.

Speaking yesterday at an event for the 97th anniversary of the establishment of the Turkish intelligence service MIT, the president Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that government officials' use of foreign messaging apps on their cellphones creates intelligence weaknesses and announced an initiative to use Turkish-made apps.
