Turkish state TRT television fired actor because it supported the opposition’s call for boycott

The Turkish state -run TRT broadcasting network today announced the removal of an actor from the cast of a popular television series, which has announced a social media call for mass commercial boycott that the opposition has addressed in protest. Following the arrest and imprisonment of Imamoglou, the Republican People’s Party (CHP) called on boycotting of the goods and services of companies who maintain relations or support Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s government. The call was expanded to include a total boycott for one day, leading some stores to close in protest of arrest, which they consider a political and undemocratic blow to the Turkish opposition. Imamoglu is Erdogan’s main political opponent and received the opposition candidate in the next presidential election.
