Turkish ultimatum to DW and other media: Ή license or blocked

The Turkish Broadcasting Authority has given three international news agencies 72 hours to obtain a license, otherwise access to their platforms will be blocked, a member of the service said today.

According to Reuters, Ilhan Tasji, who is also an opposition MP, criticized the move of the Supreme Broadcasting Council (RTUK) to ask for licenses from the Turkish-language websites of the German broadcaster Deutsche Welle (Voice of America). and Euronews, saying it was another attack on press freedom in Turkey.

“It was decided by a majority that the websites amerikaninsesi.com, dw.com/tr and euronews.com will be given 72 hours to obtain a license,” he said in a tweet.

The RTUK board, which is dominated by the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), was not immediately available for comment on why it requested the permits.

Turkey has stepped up media surveillance in recent years by giving RTUK sweeping surveillance of all online content, which it also has the power to remove. About 90% of the mainstream media in Turkey are now state-owned or pro-government.

Tastji argued that RTUK’s real goal is freedom of the press.

“After the national media, it is the turn of the international news websites to be monitored and silenced. With RTUK ‘s approach,’ there are videos on the site, it must be licensed ‘, there will be no unsupervised media,” he said.
