Serdar Berdymukhamedov, son of his president TurkmenistanGurbanguli Berdymukhamedov, is expected to win today’s presidential election and succeed his father to power.

President Berdymukhamedov, who has ruled Turkmenistan since 2007, called elections last month, saying he wanted to pave the way for a new generation of leaders, and the ruling Democratic Party anointed his son.

The outgoing president has stated that he will remain speaker of the Upper House, after handing over the reins of power.
