Turkmenistan: President Berdymukhamedov’s son favorite to win presidential election

Serdar Berdymukhamedov, the son of Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov, is expected to win today’s presidential election and succeed his father in power in the gas-rich Central Asian country.

President Berdymukhamedov, who has ruled Turkmenistan since 2007, called elections last month, saying he wanted to pave the way for a new generation of leaders, and the ruling Democratic Party anointed his son.

Serdar Berdymukhamedov, 40, who is the deputy prime minister, is running for president with eight rivals, some of whom are low-ranking civil servants.

An engineer and diplomat, Serdar Berdymukhamedov quickly assumed government office, and the Turkmen media often referred to him as the “Son of the Nation,” while his 64-year-old father is better known as the “Protector” (Arkadag).

The outgoing president has stated that he will remain speaker of the Upper House after handing over the reins of power.

Turkmenistan, a former Soviet republic bordering Iran and Afghanistan, has the world’s fourth-largest gas reserves and exports gas via pipelines to China and Russia.
