Turkmenistan: Serdar Berdymukhamedov Wins 73% Presidential Election

Serdar Berdymukhamedov, the son of the authoritarian and eccentric president of Turkmenistan, won the early presidential elections and will succeed his father, according to the results announced today.

Serdar Berdymukhamedov, 40, won the March 12 election by almost 73%, defeating the other eight candidates, some of whom were unknown civil servants, according to the Turkmenistan Electoral Commission.

His victory was considered almost certain, after his father, Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov, appointed him deputy prime minister.

Gurbanguli Berdymukhamedov controlled all the powers in this country of six million people rich in hydrocarbons and bordering Iran and Afghanistan.

The outgoing president had also cultivated a cult of personality after succeeding Saparmurat Niazov in 2006, who also ruled the country in an authoritarian manner.

Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov, 64, said in February that he had “made a difficult decision” because of his age and that he wanted to leave the country “to new leaders”.

Serdar was already in charge of the economy before his election as deputy prime minister and had replaced his father in the symbolic position of head of the Akhal-Teke International Equestrian Association, the national animal of Turkmenistan.

As of April 2021, he also holds the title of “Honorary Breeder” of Alabama, the Central Asian shepherd, which is highly respected in Turkmenistan.

The local media refer to Serdar as the “son of the nation” and his father – who remains in the post of speaker of the upper house – as a “protector”.
