Turkstream returns, and normalcy returns to electricity

Last week saw an increase in wholesale electricity prices, which exceeded 300 euros / MWh, as gas prices came under pressure over concerns over the smooth supply of fuel from Russia.

Thus, amid the information that Germany is activating the emergency plan for the supply of natural gas, the prices of natural gas have reached up to 133 euros / MWh, leading upwards to the prices of electricity.

In the Greek market last Thursday and Friday, the wholesale price of electricity reached 313 and 312 euros / MWh respectively, recording a significant increase compared to the previous days when the wholesale price of electricity was between 255 and 291 euros / MWh.

An important parameter, however, that created problems in the Greek electrical system, returns to normal from next week. The reason for the Turkstream pipeline, the maintenance of which according to schedule is completed tomorrow and from Tuesday is expected to start – except unexpectedly – the flow of Russian gas to the Greek market again. It is reminded that through Turkstream, Russian natural gas reaches Greece, which corresponds to approximately 30 – 40% of the quantities of gas consumed in the Greek market.

Finally, it is worth noting that an extraordinary meeting of EU energy ministers is scheduled for tomorrow, who will, among other things, discuss the regulation related to the filling of gas storage facilities before winter, while the talks are also expected to be put on the table. the issue of energy prices.
