Turmoil in Erdogan's party after election defeat: He canceled a legitimate mayoral election to install his own person

Recep Tayyip Erdogan's party suffered a defeat in Turkey's municipal elections, and a few days later, it was announced that a legitimate mayoral election would be canceled to be replaced by one trusted by the Turkish government. In particular, the election of Abdullah Zeidan in the Municipality of Van, who was elected with 55.48%, while participating with the pro-Kurdish People's Equality and Democracy Party (DEM, formerly HDP), was annulled. Thus, his place is expected to be taken by the candidate of Erdogan's Justice and Development Party (AKP) who received a percentage of 27.15%. According to the Turkish media, the city of Van is located on the Turkey-Iran border and is inhabited by the majority of Kurds. Thus, two days before the elections and with opinion polls showing that Erdogan's party is losing, Zeidan's right to vote was questioned. However, he was not banned from participating in the elections, with the decision canceling the election being issued 24 hours after his absolute victory.
