Twelve children and a driver were killed in a collision between a minibus heading to their school and another vehicle in South Africa today, the local government of Gauteng province announced. Seven other children were injured and taken to hospital after the crash, which happened when the minibus overturned and caught fire after being hit by another vehicle, according to a statement from Gauteng province, the country’s most populous province that includes Johannesburg and Pretoria. The ages of the children were not immediately known. The bus was carrying primary school children, who are usually between the ages of 6 and 13. In images broadcast by television, the minibus appears to have been destroyed by the fire. The accident happened about 70 kilometers west of the city of Meraphong.
