The streaming platform Amazon, under the threat of the departure of popular streamers due to cases of fraud, has decided that it is inadmissible to broadcast gambling games with digital assets.
Twitch announced that the decision was made “after observing the situation” because gambling with cryptocurrencies “is not legal in the US or other jurisdictions that provide sufficient consumer protection.”
“On October 18, we will update the policy to prohibit streaming from gaming sites, including slots, roulette or dice,” reads a statement posted on Twitter.
Gaming sites that the streaming service believes violate the law include Stake.com, Rollbit, Duelbits, and Roobet. At the same time, the platform team claims that in the coming weeks they will be able to identify even more sites that violate the law on cryptocurrencies:
“We will continue to identify sports betting, fantasy sports and poker web portals.”
According to the Twitch team, the recent rise in gambling streams on the platform has led some users to become addicted and others in debt. Gambling sites such as Curacao-based Stake.com sponsor popular streamers and celebrities such as rapper Drake, who allocate several million dollars a month to cryptocurrency gaming and promote investment in cryptocurrencies.
Last week, a Twitch streamer named Abraham “Slicker” Mohammed admitted to defrauding friends and fans of over $200,000 to pay off his gambling debts. Many popular streamers have responded to the scandal by threatening to leave Twitch unless the platform bans or regulates gambling.
Recall that back in 2019, the Twitch streaming platform began to support the MenaCash stablecoin, pegged to the US dollar. And in 2018, it allowed streamers to accept payments in cryptocurrency.
