Twitch uses AI to catch trolls in chat

Today, December 1, the developers of the streaming service Twitch officially unveiled the latest feature based on machine learning and artificial intelligence technology, which should protect content creators from so-called trolls who avoid blocking channels with new accounts. The tool, dubbed Suspicious User Detection, automatically flags messages from users in chat that AI thinks are likely trolls to evade blocking.

“This tool analyzes user behavior and characteristics of his account, and then compares the data obtained with previously blocked accounts on the streamer’s channel,” – said the developers of Twitch.

If the system identifies a user in the ranks of trolls, his message will not be displayed in the general chat, but the streamer himself and the moderators of his channel will be able to click on a special icon and view the message. At this stage, the content creator or moderator makes a decision on further blocking on the channel – if the user is nevertheless identified in the ranks of the violators by mistake, he can be “unblocked” and then all subsequent messages will be immediately displayed in the general chat. This is due to the fact that the AI does not work perfectly, so the system may well make a mistake, but the streamer should be able to make the final verdict.

Animation is available on click

It is because of the possible mistakes made by automation that Twitch will mark potential trolls with new accounts, and not block them. The developers of the new system said that it is simply impossible to create AI based on machine learning technology, which would be 100% accurate in determining the actions of violators in the context of chatting. It is for this reason that the final decision is left to the streamer and its moderators, but the company said that gradually the system will learn from the actions of content creators, and in the future the technology will work more accurately.
