Twitter: Berlin told Musk it expects moves to combat disinformation

Germany’s Transport and Digital Technology Minister Volker Vissing recently met with Elon Musk to clarify exactly what Berlin expects from Twitter Inc, particularly to combat disinformation, since the Tesla founder bought the said social networking platform. , according to the German Ministry of Digital Technology.

The German minister, who was in California in early 2023, told Musk that Germany expects Twitter to voluntarily comply with existing commitments to combat disinformation, a ministry spokesman said.

Vissing also told Musk that he expects Twitter to comply in the future with legislation governing digital technology agreed between the 27 European Union member states and lawmakers in April 2022. That legislation requires online companies to platforms to do more to police the internet from illegal posts.

“There was a very open and lengthy discussion,” the spokesman said in a statement, adding that Musk made a commitment to Wissing.

The German government will continue to monitor the situation on Twitter with a critical eye, added the spokesman, who did not elaborate on Musk’s personal statements.

Twitter Inc did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
