Twitter has to create a healthy environment for everyone who wants to expose themselves, says analyst

In his speeches on Twitter, Elon Musk – who bought the platform for $44 billion this week – often defends a network with more freedom and fewer rules. This position raises doubts about how the company under new management would face issues such as the dissemination of fake news, especially on the eve of elections in Brazil.

According to Rafael Coimbra, professor at FGV and executive editor of MIT Technology Review Brazil, it is still too early to see changes in October, when Brazilians will go to the polls, since Musk’s control should take until the end of the year to be implemented in the practice.

“It’s still going to take some time for Musk to seize power from Twitter. The problem is that there will be until the elections and the same thing that exists today, a lot of fake news”, he tells CNN.

In the expert’s opinion, the way for the platform to deal with this type of content has to go through a balance in the form of control.

“If we don’t create healthy conditions for everyone to be exposed, people who are uncomfortable will migrate to other platforms. A lot of this fake content follows a kind of layer that we can’t see,” she says.

The alternative for Twitter to deal with this scenario, according to him, is through the control of fake accounts, elimination of robots, mass shootings or changing the algorithms. “The network can promote posts with a calmer, healthier debate”
