Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal tried to reassure employees during a meeting yesterday that the company was “not hostage” to the news of its takeover bid by Elon Musk, a source told Reuters.
As Agrawal received questions from staff at the company’s messaging service, he encouraged employees to stay focused on their work by saying “we, as employees, control what happens,” according to the same source, who spoke anonymously as he did not have authorization to speak publicly on the matter.
The meeting took place after it became known that Musk, who is the CEO of Tesla, offered to buy the social networking platform for $ 43 billion.
Agrawal told staff that Twitter’s board is still considering Musk’s offer, but he can say little about it to employees.
As Agrawal accepted and answered questions, an employee asked him how the company had decided to offer Musk a board position.
“Are we starting to invite billionaires to the board?”
Agrawal replied that the board is acting in the best interests of the shareholders.
“I strongly believe that people who are important to the service we offer must have a voice and an emphasis on it so that we can learn and become better,” he explained.
Another employee asked Agrawal to comment on how he sees Musk’s definition of freedom of speech and whether that definition aligns with the way Twitter approaches freedom of speech.
Agrawal did not immediately respond to a request for comment, saying most of the company’s work is focused on improving “healthy Twitter chat.”
Earlier, Agrawal said he believed “Twitter is more than just a person, any person.”
A Twitter spokesman declined to comment on the meeting.
