Twitter, Pinterest and Periscope Ads Banned at Legislation in Turkey

Turkey this week banned ads on some popular social media platforms, including Twitter, Pinterest and Periscope. The ban was approved by the country’s Office of Information and Communication Technology.

According to a Reuters report, the advertising ban was introduced after the government passed a new social media law. The new law requires social media companies to appoint a local representative in Turkey. For now, Facebook and several other companies have said they will comply with local laws and will appoint such a representative.

Similar to Facebook, other major platforms such as YouTube have also decided to appoint a spokesperson. The law came into force today, January 19, 2021. However, Twitter and its live-streaming app Periscope have not responded in any way, as have the creators of the image-sharing app Pinterest. The new law will allow the authorities to remove content from social media platforms, rather than simply block access to them, as in the past.

This has raised concerns among many over the government’s actions to restrict content and tighten control over online platforms and mainstream media. Turkey has already fined companies such as Facebook, YouTube and Twitter for failing to comply with local laws in the past, and failure to comply will now result in a 90% reduction in service bandwidth.
