The social media company has announced that it will implement a civil rights policy it introduced in 2018 in the November 8 midterm elections. This policy is based on flagging or deleting posts with misleading content, with an emphasis on messages aimed at ending voting or claims that seek to undermine the public credibility of the electoral process.
In a statement, Twitter said that in recent months it has been taking several steps “to improve available media” regarding primary voting. By labeling a post on Twitter, the company indicates that it does not recommend its content or that it does not distributed to more users.
The San Francisco-based company is currently embroiled in a legal battle with billionaire Elon Musk over his bid to walk away from a $44 billion takeover deal for Twitter.
Musk argues that Twitter posts should only be deleted if they contain illegal content, a view shared by many in the tech industry.
