Twitter Inc TWTR.N has removed tweets from the Russian Embassy in the UK about the bombing of a children’s hospital in Mariupol for violating its rules against denying violent events, the company said on Thursday.
Three people, including a child, were killed in Wednesday’s airstrike on the maternity and children’s hospital in the Ukrainian city, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said.
“We have taken enforcement action against the tweets you mentioned for violating Twitter’s rules, specifically our hateful conduct and abusive behavior policies related to denying violent events,” a Twitter spokesperson said.
One of @RussianEmbassy’s tweets posted images with a red tag saying “fake” and said the maternity ward was not operational and was being used by the Ukrainian military.
Russia changed its stance on the hospital bombing, with a mix of statements on Thursday that ranged from aggressive denials to a call from the Kremlin to establish clear facts.
Moscow cracked down on tech platforms during the invasion of Ukraine, which it calls a “special operation,” including the restriction of Twitter and the blocking of Facebook, which is owned by Meta. Twitter has also released a privacy-protected version of its website known as the “onion service” that can be accessed over the dark web and can circumvent these restrictions.
