Two cardinals voters will not participate in the conclave for health reasons

Two cardinals voters will not participate in the conclave, the secret vote that will elect the next Pope, for health reasons, the Vatican announced on Tuesday (29).

The Holy See did not disclose the names of clerics that will not be in the election and did not give further details about their health.

The Conclave will start on May 7th and, with these dropouts, will have 133 cardinals voters. It is necessary to get two thirds of the votes to be elected Pope.

Also on Tuesday, Giovanni Angelo Becciu announced that he gave up trying to participate in the conclave. He was no longer on the official list released by the Vatican of Cardinal Voters.

Becciu was fired and banned by Pope Francis after a corruption scandal, but had not lost the title of Cardinal – only the rights and privileges of the function.

The cleric insisted that he could participate, but after meeting with other cardinals, he said he decided to obey Francis’ will.

“Having in heart the good of the Church … I decided to obey, as I always did, at the will of Pope Francis and not enter the conclave, still being convinced of my innocence,” he said.

Conclave should last a few days

Cardinals also said on Tuesday that the secret election that will elect the next Pope should last “two or three days.”

The conclave has no duration limit, and the longest lasted almost three years. However, the latest votes lasted no more than three days.
