Positive in coronavirus and specifically in the Indian variant strain were found two sailors in the Philippines, as announced by the country’s Ministry of Health.
The World Health Organization has designated this strain, known as B.1.617, as a strain of global interest, with some preliminary studies showing that it is more contagious.
This coronavirus strain has been identified to two Filipino sailors who returned to their country in April from the United Arab Emirates and Oman, said Alethea de Guzman, director of the Ministry of Health’s epidemiological service.
“We need to constantly monitor what other mutated strains may be found in the country, as well as control the spread of the mutated strains we have already recorded,” he said, adding that the sailors were isolated as soon as they returned to the Philippines and are both good for their health, as broadcast by AMPE.
In an effort to curb the spread of coronavirus strains in the country, Philippines have banned travelers from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bangladesh from entering their territory.
Indonesia and Malaysia announced this month the first cases of the variant strain B.1.617.
Also in the Philippines have been found the variant strains of the coronavirus that first appeared in Britain and South Africa, as well as the local strain P.3.
With 1.1 million covid-19 infections and 18,562 deaths The Philippines is the second country most affected by the epidemic, both in number of cases and deaths, in Southeast Asia after Indonesia.
