Two cases of malaria were recorded on vessels in the Port of Santos (SP), according to the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa).
The first case was identified on the vessel “Genco Picardy”, flying the flag of the Marshall Islands and coming from Nigeria.
The crew member, presenting with fever, body aches, difficulty breathing and numbness in his hands, was disembarked on July 4 and is hospitalized for treatment.
The second case was detected on the vessel “Common Galaxy”, also flying the Marshall Islands flag and coming from Ivory Coast.
The crew member with similar symptoms was disembarked on July 7 and remains hospitalized.
Anvisa ordered the disinfection of the two vessels and the testing of the remaining crew members for malaria.
Port authorities, as well as municipal and state epidemiological surveillance, were notified to take the necessary measures.
