Two days before the inauguration, Washington has protests against Trump

Thousands of people gathered in Washington this Saturday (18) to protest the inauguration of the president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump.

At Franklin Park, one of the three starting points for the “People’s March”, which will run through the city center, protesters gathered under a light rain to defend issues such as gender equality and autonomy over their own bodies.

More protesters gathered in two other parks also close to the White House, before heading to the final meeting of the march, at the Lincoln Memorial.

Protests against Trump’s inauguration this year are much smaller than in 2017, when the Republican won his first term.

Despite the smaller numbers, protesters said they were optimistic. “It’s a good reminder that even though we didn’t have the numbers in November, we’re not alone,” said Bethany Reeves, 27, of Arlington, Virginia.

Donald Trump was elected president by Americans in November 2024, with more than 77 million votes.

Pro-Trump events are also scheduled to take place in Washington in the coming days.

The president-elect is expected to hold a rally with supporters inside the Capital One Arena, in the city center, this Sunday (19), on the eve of the inauguration, and another one afterwards, on the afternoon of this Monday (20).

Trump should be inaugurated this Monday (20), at 2 pm Brasília time.
