Two dead and three missing in a helicopter crash in the Douro River in Portugal

At least two people have died and three others are missing after a helicopter returning from a firefighting mission crashed into the Douro River in northern Portugal, local authorities said. The pilot of the helicopter was rescued by a tourist boat sailing near the crash site, in the Lamego area. He has broken legs and was taken to a hospital. In addition to the pilot, a five-member team of specialists from the Portuguese Protection and Assistance Unit was on board the helicopter. The two were found dead in the wreckage and the other three are missing, said Silva Lambreia, the commander of the Douro River Port Authority. “We have started underwater searches around the helicopter and on the banks,” he told reporters. The causes of the accident remain unclear. Prime Minister Luiz Montenegro went to the crash site, where dozens of rescuers, divers, police and two Air Force helicopters have been deployed.
