Two executions of death row inmates are expected to take place today in Alabama and Texas

Two death row inmates is expected to be executed today in Alabama and Texas, southern USA. Casey McWhorter, 49, was sentenced to death in 1994 for murder with a firearm, a year earlier, of the father of one of his friends, Edward Lee Williams, who caught them red-handed ransacking his home, along with a third minor. Casey McWhorter was 18 at the time, the other two were 16 and 15.

He was sentenced to death with 10 jurors voting for and 2 against. Alabama is, along with neighboring Florida (to the southeast), one of only two states in the US where unanimity of the jury is not required to impose the death penalty.

In Texas, David Renteria, age 53, is expected to be executed for abduction in 2001 at the exit of a supermarket and then murder of a 5-year-old girl, by Alexandra Flores. He claims he was forced by a gang to kidnap the child and denies murdering her.

In 2023, 21 executions have already been carried out on USAincluding 7 in Texas and one in Alabama, all by lethal injection.
