Two Greek Cypriots in custody for beating a 25-year-old Turkish Cypriot woman

For 4 days the District Court of Famagusta detained two men aged 22 and 30, who are suspected of beating 25-year-old Turkish Cypriot. The incident took place in the morning hours of last Saturday in Ayia Napa and the Police are investigating a case of assault and causing grievous bodily harm.

As reported by RIK, the press representative of the Famagusta Police Department, Steve Theodoulou, stated that following a dispute between two groups, the two suspects allegedly attacked and beat the 25-year-old woman, causing her to fall from a 2 to 3 meter high fence and sustain injuries.

The 25-year-old was taken by ambulance to Famagusta General Hospital, where the doctors on duty found that she had bruises on various parts of her body and a broken tooth.

Then, the 25-year-old went to the Famagusta Police Department, where she filed a complaint about the attack.

The leader of the Turkish Cypriots, Ersin Tatar, asked the bi-communal Technical Committee to monitor the developments regarding the incident of the beating of a 25-year-old Turkish Cypriot woman.

According to the newspaper “Fileleftheros” and as relayed by the Athens News Agency, President Christodoulidis contacted Ersin Tatar, condemning the incident.

At the same time, he informed Ersin Tatar that the alleged perpetrators of the beating of the 25-year-old woman were arrested, taken into custody and will be brought to justice.

The President of the Republic Cyprus also stated that the episode does not appear to be a racist attack, but unacceptable and reprehensible criminal behavior.
