Two-Headed Snake Returns to Texas Zoo: “We’re Excited”

Two heads, two brains, two names and one body. An atypical snake, named Pancho and Lefty, is back on display at the Cameron Park Zoo in Waco, Texas, after being injured in an accident in February 2021.

The snake was donated to the zoo by a family that found it in their backyard in 2016. Since then, the animal has been on display. But in 2021 she ended up getting injured.

According to the zoo, the animal can easily injure its neck if its head tries to go in different directions and ends up getting stuck on branches, rocks and other obstacles, like it did two years ago.

“He had a wound on his left neck. So we took it out of the exhibition to treat it. Our veterinary and reptile teams worked hard to keep the wound bandaged and clean.” The snake was in the process of healing until July 2022 and was released to be exhibited again this year.

“Now that she is eating well and the wound has been fully closed for a year, we are looking forward to putting her back in the freshwater aquarium,” the statement reads.

Those responsible also point out that Pancho and Lefty’s habitat at the zoo was redesigned to receive them in the best possible way. “Her exposure doesn’t have many obstacles other than grass. We hope this design will provide enough coverage for the snake to feel safe and at the same time physically safe so it doesn’t injure its neck again.”

Finally, the zoo staff points out that they are excited to see the public’s reaction again with the animal. “Even though he’s been off-air for over two years, we get questions about him regularly, so we’re excited to have him visible to everyone again,” reads the statement.
