Two leaders of a “criminal organization” dead in Tajikistan

In a statement that two leaders of a “criminal organization” were killed in its eastern part Tajikistan security services in the eastern part of the Central Asian country.

Khurshad Mazorov and Zoir Razabov “put up armed resistance” with grenades and assault riflesbut were “cleared” (s.s. killed), clarified the state news agency Khovar.

The Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region has often been the scene of conflict since the end of Tajikistan’s civil war in the 1990s.

The authorities have been conducting a large-scale “counter-terrorism” operation since mid-May in this vast mountain range of the Pamirs, bordering China and Afghanistan. It covers almost half of the country, but is sparsely populated, with just 200,000 of Tajikistan’s nine million people living there.

Tajikistan has been ruled by Emamali Rahmon since 1992, whose deviations from authoritarianism have been repeatedly denounced by NGOs and Western capitals.

Khurshad Mazorov and Zoir Razabov belonged to a network of leaders in Gorno Badajsan and their relations with the government fluctuated considerably after the signing of the peace agreement ending the civil armed conflict.

According to Khovar, “Ten accomplices” of the two men were “arrested” as part of the operation.

The day before yesterday Saturday, Khovar broadcast that Talib Ayubekov, also a rebel leader, was also arrested during the civil war.

Last month, another opposition member, Mammadbokir Mamadbokirov, was killed in the same area, which raised fears of a new escalation.
