Two militants linked to Hezbollah were killed in Israeli strikes in Syria

Two Syrian militants linked to Hezbollah were killed on Saturday in Israeli strikes on targets believed to belong to the Lebanese armed group, an ally of Palestinian Hamas, near Damascusthe capital of Syria, as the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights told AFP.

“Two Syrian fighters working with Hezbollah were killed and seven others…wounded in Israeli airstrikes on Hezbollah positions near Sayeda Zeinab”said Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Observatory, an NGO with a wide network of sources in Syria.

The Israel has launched hundreds of airstrikes on the neighboring Syria since the start of the civil war in that country in 2011, targeting positions of the Syrian army and organizations close to Iran, such as the Lebanese Hezbollah.

The strikes intensified after the October 7 start of war between Israel and Palestinian Hamas in the Gaza Strip, sparked by the Islamist movement’s deadly attack on Israeli soil.

The head of the Observatory had earlier told AFP that Israel had struck “Hezbollah targets” in the Sayeda Zeinab area, south of Damascus.

Syria’s defense ministry said Israel struck targets near the Syrian capital, while an AFP journalist in Damascus reported shelling.

“Around 01:35 (local time, 00:35 Greek time) today (Saturday), the Israeli enemy launched an air strike from the occupied Syrian Golan, targeting specific points near the city of Damascus”the Ministry of Defense said in a statement, without mentioning casualties.

Syrian state television reported an “Israeli attack near the capital”.

The Israeli army did not immediately respond to AFP’s question about the strikes.
