Police in Spain and the Caribbean island of Curacao have arrested two more suspects in the murder of well-known Dutch journalist Peter de Vries, the prosecutor’s office announced today.
A 27-year-old Dutch national who was arrested in Curaçao will soon be transferred to the Netherlands, prosecutors said in a statement.
The other suspect, a 26-year-old Dutch man, was arrested in Spain.
The Dutch have requested his extradition in a process expected to last several weeks, the statement added.
Police on Monday arrested a Polish man who is believed to have organized the killing of de Vries in the Netherlands.
De Vries was shot last July on a busy street in Amsterdam, causing a wave of grief and outrage in the country.
Two men are on trial for carrying out the murder, but authorities are still searching for her “mastermind”.
The trial began in June. Delano J., a 22-year-old Dutch man, is accused of shooting the victim and Kamil E., a 36-year-old Polish man, is accused of driving the getaway car and conducting the crime scene reconnaissance before the crime was committed.
The verdict in that trial is expected on July 14.
Prosecutors have sought life sentences for the two men, who deny any involvement in the killing and have refused to testify in court.
The 64-year-old journalist died nine days after he was attacked with bullets on July 6, 2021, one of which hit him in the head, as he was leaving a television studio where he had been invited to a show.
Justice estimates that the murder was probably committed by a drug lord.
De Vries’ death shocked the Netherlands and sparked condemnation across Europe.
The journalist, who rose to fame for his work on the 1983 kidnapping of millionaire Freddy Heineken, had approached a key witness for justice in a major drug case.
He was since 2020 an adviser and confidant of Nabil B., the main prosecution witness in the trial of drug lord Ridwan Taghi, who had been described before his arrest in 2019 in Dubai as the most wanted criminal in the Netherlands. Taghi is mainly facing charges of murder.
Nabil B.’s brother and lawyer were both shot when he became a prosecution witness.
