The (very) difficult ones seem to have passed for the domestic aviation market. Airports and airports, even with state support, were kept “alive” in the two years 2020 – 21 and now look to the future with restrained optimism.
“Tomorrow” seems to be thinking about Athens Airport, which – in 2019 – managed to achieve a record – with a record 25.6 million passengers.
It may take some time to regain the momentum of 2019, yet it is launching actions that show momentum.
Specifically, the airport of Athens announced an open expression of interest for the creation of two new sheds and a new freight station in an area near the METROPOLITAN exhibition center.
In particular, in a total area of 180,000 sq.m., Athens Airport invited candidate investment schemes:
A. For the creation of two sheds for general aviation facilities and technical support services of 7,000 sq.m. each and
B. For the creation of a freight station (Cargo Terminal) 12,000 -15,000 sq.m.
According to aviation market executives, Athens Airport has received some initial requests for the above activities, as – due to the pandemic – private flights, as well as commercial flights are on the rise.
For its part, the AIA is willing to provide the necessary infrastructure to connect the plot with the existing airport network.
Respectively, all costs related to the development, the internal configuration of the plot and the communal facilities within the facilities will be borne by the concessionaires. The deadline for expressions of interest was set for June 30th.
