Two patients die after fire hits Santa Casa de Belo Horizonte

A fire broke out on the 10th floor of the Santa Casa de Misericórdia in Belo Horizonte (MG) on Monday night (27). The Minas Gerais Fire Department reported that the occurrence was recorded at 8 pm, after the explosion of certain equipment and an oxygen leak.

At a press conference, Lieutenant Pedro Aihara, a spokesman for the corporation, said that the teams had fought the fire, which has now been controlled, and had evacuated the entire hospital. In a note, Santa Casa reported that two patients who had a serious clinical condition could not resist and died.

At the time of the incident, 931 patients were hospitalized at the scene, the hospital said. “Santa Casa BH thanks the work carried out by the Military Police of Minas Gerais, the Military Fire Department, Civil Defense and the Mobile Emergency Service. It also highlights the work and willingness of the institution’s employees and brigade members”.

João Costa, the hospital’s legal director, reported that some patients had to be transferred to other units in the region, such as Hospital João XXIII and Hospital São Lucas. “The 10th floor will be isolated for recovery,” said Costa.

According to the Fire Department, there is no structural damage to the property, and inspections have not identified any risk on any of the floors.
