Two people are still missing after a massive wildfire engulfed two towns in Boulder County, Colorado, causing thousands to flee their homes and nearly 1,000 homes to be destroyed, authorities said today.
One of the three people missing on Saturday has been located, Boulder County Sheriff Joe Pelly told a news conference today.
“Our first and most important concern is lives, we have located one and now we have two (missing),” he said.
Authorities initially said there were no reports of casualties following the rare urban fire that broke out Thursday in the northern suburbs of Denver.
The gusts of wind on Thursday exceeded 160 km / h and pushed the flames east, in the cities of Superior and Louisville, causing their evacuation.
In about two hours, the fire had engulfed more than 24,000 acres, officials said, with the flames spreading to an area the size of a football field in seconds.
Peli noted that the two missing, whom he did not name, lived in houses that were completely destroyed by the fire.
Today, the sheriff’s assistants with the help of specially trained dogs went from house to house trying to locate any victims, Pelli described.
