Two people die in bridge collapse in Tocantins

The Tocantins Military Police confirmed that two people in the partial collapse of the bridge that connects the cities of Aguiarnópolis (TO) and Estreito (MA), on BR-226.

The structure fell into the Tocantis River and caused the death of a 25-year-old woman, who was found lifeless in the water by local people. The second victim, also female, has not yet had her age confirmed.

A 36-year-old man was found alive and taken by members of the public to the hospital in Estreito (MA) with a broken leg. So far, based on information collected at the scene, there are 5 vehicles still submerged, according to the Tocantis Military Police.

Carlos Brandão, governor of Maranhão, stated that, “due to the collapse of the BR-010 (MA) bridge, which connects Estreito (MA) to Aguiarnópolis (TO)”, the Ministries of Transport and National Integration, the National Department of Transport Infrastructure (DNIT) and the governments of Tocantins and Maranhão were called in for the collapse.
