The Ukrainian army said on Tuesday that two soldiers had been killed and 12 wounded in attacks by pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine in the past 24 hours, the highest number of deaths this year, as violations of the ceasefires increase.
The military recorded 84 cases of attacks by separatists who they said opened fire on about 40 settlements along the front line using heavy artillery.
Ukraine has accused Russia of provoking the violence, saying Moscow uses it as a pretext to formally recognize eastern Ukraine as independent and move its troops to the region, precipitating a crisis the West fears could trigger a major war.
On Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the Defense Ministry to dispatch Russian peacekeepers to two breakaway regions in eastern Ukraine, Donetsk and Lushank.
Hours earlier, the Russian leader recognized the independence and sovereignty of these two areas. Putin asked the Federal Assembly to support the decision to consider the two regions as independent and then ratify the treaties of friendship and mutual assistance with the regions.
