Two weeks before the 2nd round, the tone of candidates and market demands rise

Two weeks before the second round of the elections, the tone of the candidates rises, as was clear in this Sunday’s debate, broadcast by CNN. And the demands of voters and the market, too.

On the one hand, there are demands for more details about Lula’s economic plan, which would be the name at the forefront of the economy in an eventual PT administration. On the other hand, there are demands on how to pay the bills for public spending that rose rapidly in an election year in the Bolsonaro government.

The picture of the moment is of a strong economy, supported by positive surprises in the service sector. But what is behind the impulse worries. The sector is 10% off the pre-pandemic period, supported by a billion-dollar injection of resources.

There are more than R$ 500 million in emergency aid and other measures that raise the prospects for a GDP close to 3% for this year.

The movie is the problem. The injection of resources generated a trail of loosening of fiscal rules, along with electoral promises, the potential for a breach in public accounts for next year is R$ 420 billion, according to FGV.

This adds to a combined slowdown among the three main engines of the global economy: China, the US and Europe.
