At least two workers were killed “by Israeli bombing targeting Damascus airport in Syria this morning,” as announced by the Syrian Meteorological Service.
The two workers killed were members of the meteorological service which is based at the airport, the same source explained.
A little earlier it had become known that the international airports of Damascus and Aleppo in Syria were shut down after Israeli airstrikes.
“At approximately 05:25 (local and Greek time) the Israeli enemy launched an air attack targeting the international airports of Damascus and Aleppo”a military source had stated, according to Syrian media.
Scheduled flights to and from the two airports are being diverted to Latakia airport, the Syrian Ministry of Transport said.
This is the second time since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas on October 7 that the two airports have been hit simultaneously. On October 12, strikes had put Damascus and Aleppo airports out of business again.
In addition, Israeli airstrikes targeted Aleppo airport last weekend, injuring five people, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, while Syrian authorities indicated that the airport had been shut down.
The Israel has carried out hundreds of airstrikes against Syrian soil since 2011 when the civil war broke out in the country.
The Israeli Air Force mainly targets positions of forces supported by Iran and the Lebanese Hezbollah, allies of Damascus and enemies of Israel, but also of the Syrian army.
