Type of pneumonia diagnosed in Valesca Popozuda requires prompt treatment; understand

In this Thursday’s (11) edition of the Medical Correspondent chart, of Novo Dia, neurosurgeon Fernando Gomes explained the different types of pneumonia.

Over the weekend, singer Valesca Popozuda was hospitalized because of bacterial pneumonia in Rio de Janeiro. She tested negative for Covid-19 and ruled out the disease’s relationship with coronavirus infection. Valesca is doing well, he was already discharged and will continue the treatment at home.

The doctor explained that pneumonia is an infection of the lungs. “When we have an infection, we think of three possible causes: viruses, bacteria or fungi. It is extremely important to detect the etiological agent (who causes the disease) because there is a different specific treatment”, said Gomes.

In the case of bacterial infection, treatment is with appropriate antibiotics to fight the bacteria detected in the lung, said the doctor.

Among the causes for bacterial pneumonia, Fernando Gomes explained that different respiratory diseases can coexist. “It can happen that a cold that is not very well taken care of evolves into pneumonia”, he cited as an example.

“When there is an infection in the lung, for example, from a viral cause, which has a shorter cycle and can resolve spontaneously, the lung is vulnerable to a bacterial infection on top of the viral infection. That is why diagnosis and treatment are so important”, he said.

Bacterial pneumonia requires more attention, according to the doctor, as the bacteria can “come out” of the lung and spread throughout the rest of the body.

“The lung is like a sponge. It is very easy for this bacteria to spread through the body and cause sepsis, which is an infection with generalized inflation in the body, associated with a high number of mortality. Therefore, early diagnosis of the type of pneumonia is important.”
