Typhoon Alert Issued Ahead of Hong Kong Delivery Anniversary

Hong Kong’s a weather system issued a typhoon warning late on Wednesday, urging the public to stay away from the coast as rain and erratic weather spread across southern China ahead of the storm. 25th anniversary of Hong Kong’s transfer to the mainland.

The observatory said that as the tropical depression gradually approached the west coast of Guangdong, its outer rain tracks would affect the territory.

“There will be swells (a set of smooth and uniform sea waves). The public should stay away from the coast and not play water sports,” she said.

The coastal province of Guangdong, China’s most populous province with around 126 million people, was swamped this month by rains that triggered flooding as summer storms hit southern China.

Wind gales in the South China Sea off the east coast of Guangdong and near the Paracel Islands are expected to reach moderate magnitudes of 6 to 7, but wind in some parts of the sea could be stronger, forecasters previously said.

“Fishing vessels and low-powered vessels in the open sea must seek shelter as quickly as possible and be properly secured with moorings,” the observatory warned.
