A bill that would make abortion legal in the United States was defeated in a Senate vote on Wednesday (11), amid strong Republican opposition.
Democrats tried to pass the law through an imminent Supreme Court ruling that is expected to overturn Roe v. Wade, nearly 50, who established the national right to abortion, but the proposal never had much of a chance of success.
With 49 votes in favor and 51 against, the “Women’s Health Protection Act” was 11 votes short of the 60 needed to be brought to full debate in the Senate.
All 50 Republicans voted to block the bill. They also had the support of a Democrat, Senator Joe Manchin.
Before the vote, more than two dozen House Democrats, mostly women, protested with a march from the House to the Senate chanting “My body, my decision”. The group then entered the Senate and sat silently along a back wall as senators debated abortion rights.
Despite the defeat, Democrats hope the vote will help propel their candidates to victory in the Nov. 8 midterm elections, as public opinion polls show deep support among voters for Roe v. Wade.
This, in turn, could bolster future attempts to legalize abortion through legislation.
The decades-long battle in the United States over abortion rights erupted again last week when the Supreme Court upheld the authenticity of a draft that signaled it would soon overturn Roe v. Wade.
Such a decision would leave it to each state to determine its abortion policies.
