The US government may proceed with declaring a “very large” number of Taliban leaders, new Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Saturday, explaining that he had been informed that Afghanistan’s de facto authorities were holding “more Americans” than was known until now. “I just heard that the Taliban are holding more American hostages than previously reported,” said Mr. Rubio via X. “If this is true, we should immediately offer a very large amount of recognition for their top leaders, perhaps even more than what we offered for (Osama) bin Laden,” he added, referring to terrorist leader Al Qaeda, who was killed in a US military operation in Abbottabad, Pakistan, in May 2011.
