The United Arab Emirates (UAE) announced a US$100 million (approximately R$545,000,000) aid package for Lebanon, expressing deep concern about the “dangerous situation” in the country and its impact on regional stability, reported the state-owned Emirates news agency.
The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs also reiterated its “unwavering stance towards the unity, national sovereignty and territorial integrity of Lebanon” and emphasized “steadfast support for the people of Lebanon during this challenging period,” according to a statement cited by the report.
The UAE’s aid comes as the United Nations (UN) agency for humanitarian emergencies (OCHA) warns of the devastating impact on civilians of recent escalations in Lebanon.
OCHA urged the international community to “urgently promote de-escalation and ensure that all parties respect international humanitarian law, while prioritizing immediate humanitarian assistance to affected people.”
The director of the humanitarian agency Relief International in Lebanon told CNN on Sunday that the capacity of the humanitarian sector is already limited after the displacement of around 1 million people in the country by Israeli attacks.
The World Food Program also launched an emergency project to expand food assistance to up to 1 million people in need in Lebanon.
