UAE-Iran: Steps to de-escalate tension between the two countries through diplomacy

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is taking steps to de-escalate tensions with Iran as part of a political choice through diplomacy and away from confrontation, a senior official said Monday.

Anwar Gargas, a diplomatic adviser to the UAE president, said the Gulf country was deeply concerned about Iran’s behavior in Iraq, Syria, Yemen and Lebanon.

“Beyond that, we have taken steps to de-escalate tensions, as we are not interested in a confrontation. The whole region would pay the price for such a confrontation in the coming decades,” he told the Abu Dhabi Strategic Dialogue.

“I am realistic about the chances of success. It will be a slow process, but we hope that over time we can build more trust between us and start making progress towards a more sustainable and mutually beneficial situation,” he added.

Gulf states are closely monitoring talks between world powers and Iran to revive the 2015 Tehran nuclear deal.

Gargas said the UAE is working to build bridges with all countries, including those with which it has serious disagreements.

He cited the resumption of diplomatic relations with Israel last year as an example of the UAE’s policy, as well as its recent actions regarding the crises in Eritrea and Sudan.

On Afghanistan, Gargas said recent developments had become “very problematic” for the UAE on two fronts: the escalation of extremism and the impression it had on the US role in the region.

The UAE has moved to fight Islamist organizations in the region, such as the Muslim Brotherhood.

“We know the US role is changing, but it remains important,” he said, adding that the US remains the UAE’s main security partner.
