The diplomatic advisor to the president of the United Arab Emirates said on Saturday (3) that the United States should press for a quick end to the war between Israel and Hamas and that a new process needs to be found for the issue between Israelis and Palestinians or the US will be seen as ineffective.
Anwar Gargash also stated that Israel’s policy of containment, which has been the “landmark” of the Palestinian issue for the past two decades, has failed and called for a new approach that deals with refugees, borders and East Jerusalem.
“US involvement will be seen in when we end this war, the faster the better, and whether we can have another type of process in solving problems, in resolving the issue,” he said, at a political conference in the capital Abu Dhabi.
“If this crisis continues, especially on the humanitarian side and if this crisis takes us back to the starting point, to the old pre-October 7 policy of containment, I think the American role here will not be, forget right or wrong, it will not be seen as effective,” he added.
The UAE was the most important Arab state to sign the 2020 Abraham Accords, a US-brokered pact to establish diplomatic ties with Israel that broke decades of a pan-Arab policy that called for a Palestinian state before normalization.
A power in the Arab Gulf, the UAE is one of the US’s closest partners in the Middle East and hosts US forces. They have also pursued a more independent and assertive foreign policy over the past decade, demonstrated by their relations with Israel.
