The New York Times reported Tuesday that the death of a civilian cyclist in the city of Butsa by Russian armor was evidenced by a video recorded by the Ukrainian army unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and uploaded to its website.
The footage was taken in Butsa in late February, when the Russian suburb of Kiev was still under Russian occupation, according to the newspaper.
The video shows someone riding a bicycle along a road. When it reaches a corner, it gets off the bike and passes it on foot.
As he appears, two armored vehicles open fire in his direction with machine guns. Smoke and dust rise at the point where they throw.
The New York Times assures that they were able to independently verify the material. The man’s body was still at the spot where he had fallen dead after Russian forces left the suburb of Kiev, he said.
On Monday, the newspaper published satellite photos depicting the remains of several people on the streets of Butsa in mid-March, before Russian troops left. However, it is of course not possible to ascertain who killed them from these snapshots.
Images of civilian bodies found in the Kiev suburbs have sparked international outcry.
Kyiv, Washington and their allies accuse the Russian military of torturing and executing innocent people. Moscow denies this, characterizing the accusations as non-existent and fabricated. US President Joe Biden has said that Vladimir Putin should be tried for war crimes, something the Kremlin has categorically rejected.
